I am a 52 year old woman who has fought all my battles with strength and hope. I was told at 10 years of age I would never marry, have children and go blind and not live long. My mother was trying to protect me but instead she created an extremely sad person who never believed she deserved anything good. Well I married, divorced, had a BEUTIFUL, HEALTHY DAUGHTER, OWNED 3 SALONS AND NOW I AM SEARCHING FOR A REASON TO CONTINUE.

I enjoyed the story very much, well knit and well narrated.
The opening scene is certainly effective. The story draws the readers in when the son tries to explain his reasons. Next, the father as an authoritative figure is established. His wife apparently is aware of her husband’s disposition. She is supportive of her son without being explicitly antogonistic towards her husband.
Strange as it may sound, the situation is the same in most of the families across the globe. In that sense, your story crosses cultural and geographic bounds.
The one line that really brings the message home is the line when father goes to boy’s room and finds him sleeping "the sleep of the innocent."

The father’s decision to change is a potent moment. In that sense, I would leave the last paragraph out (starting with “Just as there ...”) or make it sound less sermonizing at least. In my experience, or maybe from where I come from, readers like stories they can identify with. They befriend characters and prefer the narrator to be at the same level.
It is also possible to use this paragraph to reinforce the father’s decision to change. Thanks for sharing the story.
I think there are a couple typos. However, I being non-native speaker would not dare pointing them out.

Best wishes for happy writing.
